15 Jun 10 ‘No Unilateral steps by US for Kyrgyz situation’

As the interim government in Kyrgyzstan sought external assistance in quelling the ethnic violence in various parts of the country, the United States said it wont take “any unilateral steps” in response to the situation.

A large number of foreign nationals including Indians, mostly students, are trapped in the violence that has erupted in the country last week.

“I don’t think we are looking at any unilateral steps by the United States at this point,” the State Department spokesman P J Crowley said.

The Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, spoke over phone with the Kazakh foreign minister on situation in the Kyrgyz Republic, he said.

“I think we will listen to what the Kyrgyz Government might ask, but I think right now we are focused on how we can respond effectively within the region internationally,” he said.

15 Jun 10 Australia to impose sanctions on Iranian entities

Australia today said it will impose its own sanctions against Iran to persuade and pressurise it to reverse its nuclear programme, on the heels of fresh penalties imposed by the UN Security Council.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said Australia will impose sanctions on a bank, a shipping line, and an individual involved in a construction company — all entities somehow linked to the nuclear programme.

“These new measures put Australia at the forefront of efforts to persuade Iran to reverse its current path of confrontation with the international community,” Smith said.

In an official statement, the minister said Resolution 1929 reflected the international community’s deep concerns about Iran’s nuclear programme, in particular its failure to comply with previous UN Security Council and International Atomic Energy Agency resolutions.

15 Jun 10 What to do with these malware attacks

Last week, we heard about the massive hack that hit more than 100,000 sites, including websites belonging to police, newspapers (among them The Wall Street Journal) and other major organizations. When visitors tried to access the compromised sites, they were redirected to a website that attempted to install malware. It was another stark reminder that life on the web isn’t all champagne and hyperlinks; it has a dark side.

Any of you who are involved with online business understand how frustrating it can be when your site is hacked and sensitive information is disclosed. It causes a great deal of inconvenience that ultimately leads to making your brand less trustworthy.

We all must find a solution this problem

22 Apr 10 What is a Contract

A contract is, in essence, a written meeting of the minds. An effective contract is an invaluable tool that will help your organization and the contractor understand what is expected, and how to resolve any problems. Its primary value is that it forces both parties to answer some challenging questions before the work gets started. It is the testament of a mutually beneficial relationship or transaction.

20 Apr 10 Reykjavik Volcano spewing less ash as lava boils up

The dramatic volcanic eruption that belched out the ash plume responsible for grounding much of Europe entered a new phase today — producing less smoke but bubbling with lava and throwing up chunks of molten rock.

Less ash is potentially good news for stranded travelers, but scientists who are monitoring the mountain’s explosion warn the eruption is not finished, and may still set off other eruptions at nearby volcanoes.

The first sighting of glowing magma in the Eyjafjallajokull volcano was made today, though the lava is not flowing down the mountain, Icelandic geologists said.

“It is sputtering and bubbling and will probably create a cone formation” as the lava spills over and freezes into rock, said Kristin Vogfjord, geologist at Iceland’s Met Office in Reykjavik.

The volcanic eruption has been particularly explosive because it has surged under a 200 metre-thick glacier.

11 Mar 10 United States honours first women Air Force pilots

More than 60 years after the end of World War II, American lawmakers have paid tribute to the pioneering but long-overlooked role played by women pilots in the US Air Force.

About 1,000 women piloted fighter planes in the United States from 1942 to 1944 when they joined the Women Airforce Service Pilots, dubbed the WASPs.

Their mission was not to go into combat zones, but to move aircraft between bases, test fly planes which had undergone repairs and help in training. Their contributions critically freed up male pilots to participate in combat missions.

Some 38 women pilots died on the missions, and were never accorded any military honours. Fewer than 300 of the women are alive today.
