Birth Of Hollywood As A Film Industry

Located in the United States and founded as Los Angeles district in 1910, Hollywood is a world cinema mecca being the most important film industry in the world.

In the early twentieth century the film companies occasionally shot some scenes in Hollywood with the firm intention of taking advantage of the abundant natural scenarios such as mountains, valleys, deserts and coasts.

After the Second World War, immigrants from different countries acted as extras. By 1919 four out of five films in the world were made in Hollywood.

But I do not want to get ahead, without first mentioning the origin of Hollywood and is that this has to do with the beginnings of cinema. Many people attribute to the origin of the seventh art the Lumiere brothers in Paris, France with the invention of a machine capable of projecting moving images onto a white canvas, in addition to creating functions where many people could enjoy the show. But many others consider Thomas Alva Edison as the father of the seventh art since it was he who created four years before the Lumiere a system in motion, which was later perfected by one of his collaborators William Kennedy Laurie Dickson and ended up calling it a kinetoscope.

In this way, the kinestocope began to attract the attention of many people throughout the world, so much so that it is likely that the Lumiere brothers were inspired by this to invent the cinematograph.

Taking into account the above is related to the beginnings of cinema but what does this really have to do with Hollywood? After the kinetoscope became so famous, Edison began to market it to his name and claimed the invention of it; obtaining multiple benefits, in addition obtained the patent of the cinematographer

Another prominent character in the origins of Hollywood was David Wark Griffith born in Kentucky, he started as an actor in theater companies and for a time he dedicated himself to be a writer but it was not until 1908 when he made his first movie ” The Adventures of Dolly ” and in this way successfully climbing steps of fame for the producer Biograph.

His best years as a producer were undoubtedly from 1908 to 1914, when he made more than four hundred films and adapting in his stories to great writers such as Shakespare and Jack London as well as telling stories of the western, social metaphors and historical themes.

Griffith had a great worldwide boom and is credited with the invention of most artistic resources and the systematization of narrative language. His technical innovations gave rise to new ways of creating films such as the first plane, the short shot, long shot, and flash back and parallel shot.

The North American firmly mentioned “The plane is the holder of the dramatic load par excellence”. He also introduced for the first time the characteristic of showing the thinking of the protagonists through a series of effects. All these new techniques started a new way of making movies.
