‘No Unilateral steps by US for Kyrgyz situation’

As the interim government in Kyrgyzstan sought external assistance in quelling the ethnic violence in various parts of the country, the United States said it wont take “any unilateral steps” in response to the situation.

A large number of foreign nationals including Indians, mostly students, are trapped in the violence that has erupted in the country last week.

“I don’t think we are looking at any unilateral steps by the United States at this point,” the State Department spokesman P J Crowley said.

The Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, spoke over phone with the Kazakh foreign minister on situation in the Kyrgyz Republic, he said.

“I think we will listen to what the Kyrgyz Government might ask, but I think right now we are focused on how we can respond effectively within the region internationally,” he said.
